4-Sept-2004  – MultiGate development has paused - if you are keen to continue its development, please contact the developer.

17-Aug-2004  – Beta2 of MultiGate is released! This version also contains the Firewall.Guard plugin.

14-Aug-2004  – Beta2 of MultiGate is nearing release. The Firewall.Guard plugin in going through final testing and should be ready soon.

25-May-2004  – Beta1 of MultiGate released. This version is a bootable ISO with the base/core MultiGate web manager and networking functionality. The system can route packets but has no other security features or plugins - yet!!

22-April-2004  – The SourceForge site went online. Information about the project has been posted.

SecurityPlugins:

MultiGate includes SecurityPlugins that allow quick installation, configuration and operation of various Open Source security modules designed to enhance security and protection capabilities of the gateway. Built on a pluggable framework, extra components can be added or removed to accommodate the exact security requirements needed by the user. The following is a list of the potential SecurityPlugins, with the first three (3) having been complete;

• System.Config - web management and configuration (Jetty web service)

• Update.Director - web auto update (java based secure update)

• Firewall.Guard - protection against unwanted access to your systems (netfilter/IPTables)

• Intrusion.Guard - stop malicious worms breaking into your computers (inline snort)

• Virus.Guard - eliminate dangerous virus entering the organisation (clam AV)

• Spam.Guard - remove unwanted email from wasting your time (spamassassin)

• Content.Guard - block objectionable material on the web (squid guard)

• VPN-Client.Director - enable secure b2b communications (pptp vpn)

• Vuln.Director - understand your weaknesses (nessus scanner)

• Risk.Director - analyses your true risk position (jCharts & iText)

In the future, MultiGate will contain other innovative SecurityPlugins based on various Open Source security projects.

MultiGate is a multi-function security gateway (firewall). It is a software appliance designed to install and run on x86 standard hardware. It contains a self-installing ISO (CDRom) which configures and installs the system software and required libraries. Management and administration is performed via browser that is served content from a purpose built web server. The web server, glue and logic is all Java based.

Built on Linux and other Open Source components, it provides an easy and integrated solution designed to secure and protect networks. Developed in Java, the web server and controlling services provide all installation, configuration and administration functions for the system. The system has been developed with is prime focus being "Ease of Use" for the novice user. Majority of Open Source firewalls are complex to configure and daunting for the first-time user. MultiGate contains many wizards and simplified interface to get the user up and running securely in a short period of time. Advanced users can enable advanced options to allow finer tuning of settings and configuration.
